Sigiriya

Sigiriya, also known as the Lion Rock, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a renowned tourist destination located in central Sri Lanka.

The rock fortress of Sigiriya built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD and served as a royal palace and fortress. It situated a top a massive rock column, rising about 200 meters above the surrounding plains. The name “Lion Rock” comes from the lion paws that were once present at the entrance, although only the paws remain visible today.

One of the most remarkable features of Sigiriya is the frescoes painted on the rock face. These vibrant frescoes, known as the lion rock Damsels or the “Heavenly Maidens,” depict beautiful women in various poses. To reach the summit of Sigiriya, visitors must climb a series of steep staircases, passing through the impressive Lion Gate.

Lion Terrace

The Mirror Wall is a highly polish wall located in Sigiriya. In ancient times, it adorned with graffiti and verses praising the beauty of the frescoes. Although visitors no longer allowed to write on it. It is the Mirror Wall still reflects the rich history and cultural significance of Sigiriya.

The Royal Pond

The Royal Pond, also known as the Royal Bathing Pool. It is a large rectangular pool located in the vicinity of Sigiriya. It believed to have been used by the royals for bathing and recreational purposes. The well-preserved remains of the Royal Pond highlight the advanced water management systems of ancient Sri Lanka.

The Sigiriya frescoes are a collection of ancient paintings found on the rock face of Sigiriya.
