Kumana National Park, also known as Yala East National Park,. It is a wildlife sanctuary located in the Ampara District of Sri Lanka. It situated in the southeastern part of the country, approximately 391 kilometers (243 miles) from Colombo, the capital city. The national park spans an area of about 35,664 hectares (88,255 acres) and renowned for its diverse range of flora and fauna.

 

Kumana National Park is primarily recognized as an important bird sanctuary and is considered one of the most significant bird habitats in Sri Lanka. It provides a nesting ground for several species of migratory waterbirds, including the rare and endangered Lesser Adjutant stork. Over 255 bird species recorded in the park, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and ornithologists.

Kumana National Park Animals

Apart from its avian inhabitants, It is also home to various other wildlife species. The park boasts a rich population of elephants, leopards and crocodiles. In addition various species of deer, including the endemic Sri Lankan sambar deer. Visitors can also spot reptiles, amphibians, and a variety of smaller mammals within the park’s boundaries.

The ecosystem of Kumana National Park consists of a combination of mangrove swamps, lagoons and scrublands. And forests, providing a diverse range of habitats for its inhabitants. The Kumana Villu, a natural swamp lake within the park, is a significant breeding ground for aquatic birds and serves as a crucial water source for wildlife during dry seasons.

One of the iconic inhabitants of Kumana National Park is the Sri Lankan elephant. However, these majestic creatures roam the park and can often be spotted near water bodies or grazing in the grasslands. The park provides an important habitat for elephants, offering them ample food sources and water.

Leopards, though elusive, also reside within Kumana National Park. These stealthy predators known for their agility and camouflage, making them challenging to spot.   So, lucky visitors may catch a glimpse of these beautiful big cats lounging on tree branches or prowling through the undergrowth. The park is home to several species of deer and including the endemic Sri Lankan sambar deer.  Which is larger than its Indian counterpart. Other deer species like the spotted deer and barking deer can also be found in the park. So gracefully grazing or cautiously observing their surroundings.

Crocodiles are another fascinating feature of Kumana National Park. The park’s lagoons and water bodies provide ideal habitats for these reptiles. Mugger crocodiles, which are the most common species in Sri Lanka. And  we can see basking in the sun or gliding through the water.

In addition to these larger animals, Kumana National Park also supports a variety of smaller mammals such as wild boars and Indian pangolins. In addition fishing cats and Indian foxes. And also reptiles like monitor lizards, snakes, and tortoises can be spotted as well.

Visitors to Kumana National Park can explore the park through organized safari tours led by experienced guides. These tours typically take visitors on jeep rides along designated trails, allowing them to observe the wildlife. And the appreciate the natural beauty of the park. It is advisable to visit the park during the dry season from April to July, as wildlife sightings are more frequent during this period.
